Feb. 8, 2010 – Come summer, sore backs with tight pockets could reap benefits from
Carl Sandburg College’s Therapeutic Massage certificate program.
Eleven students started the three-semester program this January. After
a few weeks in the textbooks, on Jan. 28 they got their first taste of
actual massage.
Massages will be offered for the first time in CSC’s downtown annex
later this year. With a licensed supervisor overseeing, the students
will charge about $25 for an hour of Swedish massage, about half what
you’d expect to pay at a licensed massage therapist, according to the
program’s director Barb Kirchgessner.
But that’s putting the horse before the cart; the 11 future massage therapists first must learn proper techniques and practices.
Some of the program’s requirements were unexpected by the students.
“I was surprised by how much of the body you have to know,” said Kristi Pierce, Bushnell.
“I didn’t think about this before I entered the program, but there a
lot of medical terms and procedures within massage therapy that I
