CMTBC highlights new technology, social media in annual report

April 4, 2013 – The College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC) has released its annual report summarizing the College’s work in 2013, with particular focus on the college's adoption of new technologies in the past year and the profession's use of social media.

In addition to messages from the board chair and the registrar, the
report contains contributions from the chairs of all college committees,
outlining the work of the committees in 2013.

"CMTBC has been active in many key areas, including amendment of the
College’s Bylaws, the development and launch of integrated technology
systems, and continued growth in efficiency and effectiveness of the
organization’s overall operations," Robin Perry, CMTBC president, wrote on the report.

The
report also features two RMTs in stories about serving as an examiner
during the registration exams, and using CPR to save a neighbour’s life.

In
her message, CMTBC registrar and Susan Addario highlighted the
college’s investment and focus on technology and automating its business
processes as a result of many questions from the profession about the
use of technology and online communications for their practices.

"At
the College, appropriate use of current technology is allowing us to
streamline day-to-day interactions (such as paying fees and reporting
continuing education credits) and free up College resources for the more
complex work of regulation. We are committed to using technology to
enhance the quality of our regulatory work and make us more responsive
to registrants and to the public," Addario wrote.

While there are
many benefits to the use of new online communication tools, such as
social media, she cautioned "The immediacy of social media can also lead
to lapses in professional judgment and breaches of privacy."

She
said the CMTBC Bylaws should serve as a guide for the profession when
conducting online communications and engaging in social media.

The
report also provides a high level overview of the college’s financial
position. More detail is included in the complete audited 2013 financial
statements.

Both
the Annual Report and the audited financial statements are available on
the CMTBC website’s Publications page.
