With cannabis becoming legalized on October 17th, the regulatory body reminds its members what is and isn’t acceptable, addressing frequently asked questions and concerns from RMTs, and their clients.
The emailed notice from the CMTO reminds its members that “providing advice or recommendations to clients about substances such as cannabis is not within the Scope of Practice of massage therapy.”
Regarding topical products containing cannabis (and that includes cannabidiol-CBD-containg products), the CMTO advises that “RMTs should not administer or apply cannabis in any form to a client during a treatment,” due to the lack of current research and regulations surrounding potency and quality.
The CMTO says their recommendations are “consistent with the College of Massage Therapists of Britich Columbia,” and they will continue to monitor the situation and “review this position as appropriate.”
