The Canadian Sports Massage Therapists Association announces its Pre and Post Event Sport Massage Course to be held at the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy on April 17 and 18, 2010.

March 22, Cambridge, ON – The Canadian Sports
Massage Therapists Association announces its Pre and Post Event Sport Massage
Course to be held at the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy on April
17 and 18, 2010.

This course is ideal for massage therapists,
physiotherapists, athletic therapists and sport chiropractors who would like to
improve their knowledge and skills of working with athletes in any
environment.  It will provide
participants with sport massage theory and practical techniques that can be
utilized at sporting events, with athletic teams, or in their own clinic
setting. The knowledge and practical experience that participants will gain
would be of great benefit for anyone working with athletes at any level
including those who will be working with athletes at any Major Games or Olympic
Games.

Objectives of this Course

 Participants will gain:

  • an
    appreciation for the value of Sport Massage and its similarities or
    differences to classical massage
  • a
    competency in several basic massage techniques:

compressions, cross-fibre massage,
jostling, effleurage and petrissage,

  • a competency in the theory and techniques of pre-event, post-event and
    inter-event Sport Massage
  • an
    effective protocol when covering an athletic event
  • a quick and concise method of gathering useful information to make the Sport
    Massage session more efficient
  • an
    understanding of the specific indications and contraindications for a
    variety of Sport Massage circumstances
  • an
    understanding of the physiological and psychological effects of Sport
    Massage
  • As well as the ability to provide the athletes of the
    sports with an excellent quality of massage.


Instructors

Carolyn
Caesar ,  RMT, SMT(C)
Certified Sport Massage Therapist

A 1998
graduate of Sutherland and Chan
Massage College,
Carolyn has been doing massage therapy for our National Rowing team since
1998.  Carolyn was selected to the 2000,
2004 and 2008 Summer Olympic Games and has covered nine World Rowing
Championships and nine European Tours. 
In addition to this, Carolyn has also traveled with our National Sailing
Team and Bobsleigh Team.  Carolyn works
full time at physiotherapy on Bay
Street in Toronto,
ON.  She also has a background in physiology from
the University of Western Ontario, has completed her second year at the
Canadian College
of Osteopathy in Toronto
and has recently completed her Acupuncture Certification.

Johanna Thackwray, RMT, BHK, SMT(C) Certified Sport Massage Therapist

Johanna graduated from the Canadian College
of Massage & Hydrotherapy in 1993 and followed this with completing her
Bachelor of Human Kinetics degree in 1999 from UBC.  Johanna was selected for the Canadian Health
Care Team for the 2003 PanAm Games, for the 2005 Francophone Games and most
recently for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. 
Johanna has been the Massage Therapist for the Canadian Water Ski Team
since 2003 and has worked with the Canadian Paralympic Swim Team (SWAD) since
2006.  She has been a Massage Therapist
for several International and World Games, both single and multi-sport.  Johanna has also had the privilege of
teaching sport massage to physicians and physical therapists in Iran.  Johanna works full time at Manual Concepts
Physiotherapy in Guelph, Ontario
