HST and insurance reimbursement in Ontario

July 31, Toronto — The Financial Services Commission of Ontario has clarified that insurers must pay HST in addition to massage therapy fees.

Earlier this year, the Registered Massage Therapists’ Association of Ontario (RMTAO) brought member concerns about the application of HST to the Minor Injury Guidelines (MIG) before the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO). RMTAO negotiated on behalf of its members and the profession. As a result, the FSCO recently issued an official statement clarifying the correct application of HST and the MIG.

According to FSCO, the insurer must pay HST in addition to the amounts that are payable under the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS) and the MIG. This means that the HST portion of the cost of massage therapy is not counted toward the MIG caps and must be paid in addition to these caps.
