I began my career over 20 years ago as a Massage Therapist and am now a spa owner, consultant, trainer and founding president of the Association of Premier Spas of Ontario. Over the years I have watched the Spa Industry change significantly to become an important provider of health maintenance and illness prevention programs and services.
Client care is our main objective as a profession, and part of providing responsible care is to be as informed about all modalities and alternative treatment options available to our clients. It is imperative to understand what other health care treatment protocols involve if we are to make informed decisions regarding the referral of our clients for alternative and/or additional treatment.
With this, our eighth issue, we kick off a third year in print for Massage Therapy Canada magazine. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported the magazine from the very beginning and would also like to take this opportunity to welcome any of you who may be new readers.

As I mentioned in my last article, we often ignore joints and their intrinsic structures as well as joint mobilization techniques that would be of benefit. The assessment of facet joint dysfunction, in cases of low-back pain, is a specific area that we often leave to other health care professionals.
Romeo is often quoted as saying, “What is in a name? A rose, by any other name would still smell as sweet.” As a communication teacher, I always object to students mistaking a line from a play for truth. Consider the following not-so-hypothetical conversation.
Did you know that the first sense organs to develop are the ears? How important the ears and sound are to our development. A young fetus is affected by sound from inside the womb. The fetus lives in such an enchanting aquatic environment and since sound travels much more efficiently through water, it is amplified.
Women who are abused come from all socio-economic, educational and ethnic groups. More than 50 per cent of women are sexually abused by the age of 18. Traditional therapies, such as psychotherapy, although somewhat effective (Douglas & Strom 1988, Gage 1991, McArthur 1990, Mitchell 1991) do not treat the body, which is the object of the abuse.
As preparation for writing The Quest for Authentic Power: Getting Past Manipulation, Control, and Self-Limiting Beliefs, I undertook training in a variety of therapeutic techniques including Craniosacral Therapy, Therapeutic Touch, and several approaches to counseling.
Essential oil is the umbrella name given to a variety of aromatic compounds extracted from plant material. About 90 per cent are correctly called essential oils, the product of distillation. The remainder are essences, produced by expression (squeezing) of citrus rinds, and absolutes, flower scents such as rose and jasmine, extracted by a method that includes using solvents and ends with a lower temperature alcohol distillation.
Purpose: The objective of this exploratory, cross-sectional, and multi-site study, ethically approved by the University of Toronto, was to ascertain characteristics of chronically-ill, non-institutionalized Toronto (Ontario Canada) area residents (aged 60 and over) who: (1) used, (2) had stopped using or (3) had never used registered massage therapy. Due to space limitations, only a few of the analyzed variables are noted below.
The longtime hope of registered massage therapists across Canada is looking like a dream on the horizon in British Columbia. B.C. offers a three-year, and more importantly 3,000-hour curriculum, (a three-year program may not necessarily consist of 3,000 hours of instruction), the highest level of training, at least in terms of numbers of hours, in North America.
