P.E.I. becomes 5th province regulated for massage therapy in Canada
MARCH 1—Exciting news for massage therapists in P.E.I. today as massage therapy becomes a regulated health profession under the PEI Regulated Health Professions Act. The province is the fifth to be regulated in Canada.

The P.E.I. government’s final proclamation of their legislation “Regulated Health Professions Act” was in 2014. In the years since, the PEI Massage Therapy Association (PEIMTA) has worked hard to remain in contact with the legislative specialist within government for the past few years, and participated in consultations on an ongoing basis. After the government included “massage therapy” as one of the professions wanting to become regulated in the province, the group put their heads down to meet the requirements set forth by the government. Massage therapy was one of many health professions to be regulated in the province, as the list of professions also included acupuncturists, dental hygienists and lab techs, among others. The College of Massage Therapists of PEI is currently being formed.
As per the RMTAO, a partner of the Canadian Massage Therapy Alliance: “The regulation of massage therapy in PEI has implications for massage therapists across Canada. Now that massage therapy will be regulated in five provinces – Ontario, British Columbia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island – an application for tax exemption status for the massage therapy profession can be made to the Canadian Minister of Finance.”
