Recently, I received a flyer from a build-it-yourself workshop broker. For $250-300 you can participate in a series of workshops that will teach you how to install a wood floor, plumbing essentials, do a bathroom reno, upholster furniture... even put up drywall and perform carpentry. Apparently, each workshop is presented by industry professionals, and you are assured that you will save thousands of dollars in home renos by doing it yourself (DIY).
Deep tissue massage (DTM) is a concept that all RMTs are aware of, yet very few agree on what it involves. Most of us understand DTM in terms of pressure: if we apply more of it, it will penetrate deeper into the tissue. This idea is taught in most massage therapy programs – we progress from superficial to deep, apply a slower rate, add more force with our hands and forearms and use our body weight and muscle power.
The Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games were on Canadian soil and I was thankful to be part of the medical team in the sister location of Whistler, B.C. The Olympics had all the glitz and glory that one would expect. Then, the Paralympic athletes arrived and these inspirational, elite athletes enriched my life therapeutically and personally beyond words.
Lymphedema of the extremities remains a therapeutic challenge. Massage therapists have techniques available to them for treating lymphedema, with promising levels of success. Use of low-intensity laser therapy has also demonstrated effectiveness for this condition and is being used by a growing number of manual practitioners as a primary, and/or adjunct therapy to manipulation and massage.
