The Massage Therapist Association of Alberta (MTAA) is engaging massage therapy practitioners across the province in a series of information sessions aimed at increasing awareness about regulation and what it means for the profession.

"Despite the concerns that have surrounded the idea of regulating the
profession, there are a number of real, meaningful benefits to becoming
regulated under the Health Professions Act that are applicable to every
person in practice in Alberta," the MTAA said in a statement issued on
its website.

Alberta’s massage therapy profession is currently
not regulated by the provincial government, but certain professional
associations in Alberta, including the MTAA, have been pushing for
regulation.

The information sessions began March 4 in Medicine
Hat, and has travelled to various locations across the province. The
last session will be held in Edmonton on March 28.

"Practitioners
from across Alberta, regardless of their association affiliation who
have questions – or just want to play an active role in thing – are
invited to attend the information session we are hosting throughout the
province this March," the MTAA said.

The association added that
the goal of the sessions is to be inclusive, in and "open, transparent
dialogue" so that all practitioners have the opportunity to understand
the benefits that regulation will bring for massage therapists in
Alberta.
