New facility for Georgian College RMT students
April 15, Barrie, ON – Georgian College is soon to be home to the Centre for Health and Wellness, a state-of-the-art facility that will house clinics and laboratories for the college’s health care programs, including massage therapy.

For the past year and a half, anyone driving along Highway 400 in Barrie has been able to see the building of the Centre for Health and Wellness. A 172,000 square foot facility, this is the college’s largest academic expansion at the Barrie Campus. All health and wellness students will have access to first rate labs, equipment and community health clinics, as of this coming September.
Students of the massage therapy program, in particular, will have a massage lab/classroom and access to a new Massage Therapy Clinic. A new feature will be a room dedicated to remedial exercises, only accessible by students and their clients.
“All students in the massage therapy program get hands-on experience in the clinic,” says massage therapy program co-ordinator, Brian Dormer. “This really prepares them for the field, as they will already have experience in working with clients when they complete the program.”
In addition to hands-on experience, students will also have the opportunity to participate in a groundbreaking client care system. All client medical records will be electronic, allowing referrals from one health care clinic to another be completely streamlined.
“Nothing like this exists in Simcoe County,” says Dormer. “Whether it’s the Massage Therapy Clinic, Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic, Georgian Optical or the Spa and Esthetics Clinic in the new Centre, we’re all going to be connected.”
Once the client has been referred, their medical record will be accessible to the appropriate health care provider instantly. The inter-professional focus will provide the best outcomes for clients, as well as for staff and students who will be caring for them.
Helping those in need is a key element of the massage therapy program, and it goes beyond providing day-to-day treatments. The Massage Therapy Clinic has partnered with local organizations such as Parkinson Society Canada, Barrie Chapter, and Brain Injury Services Muskoka/Simcoe to provide free treatments. These treatments are for people with a specialized need, and who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to receive them. Dedicated space in the clinic has been allocated for such treatments.
Socially conscious, the clinic is also environmentally friendly, with an online booking system and completely paperless operation. Additionally, all massage therapy equipment is ergonomically designed to ensure all students and their clients are comfortable and free of risk of injury.
Having achieved a strong client base, the Massage Therapy Clinic currently has a two-week waiting period for appointments. The new expanded clinic will allow for more members of the community to access the clinic and will help decrease this waiting period.
