3, Ottawa, ON – The Canadian Council of Massage Therapy Schools (CCMTS)
is proud to announce that Chatelain Jean is the winner of the 2010-2011
Student Research Award.
Chatelain Jean is a recent graduate of the International Academy of Massage in Ottawa, Ontario. Mr. Jean’s winning paper is an interpretive study entitled, The Effects of Massage on Hypertension. Mr. Jean’s paper was one of four submissions in competition for CCMTS’ first student research award.
Mr. Jean was born in Haiti. He came to Canada in 1996 and is married with two sons. Mr. Jean indicated that for many years he worked at different jobs but felt he needed to find a career that was more personally rewarding. He chose massage therapy because he wanted that career to be one where he could help others. Of his education at the International Academy of Massage, Mr. Jean says the program was intense but excellent and he was well supported by the faculty and staff of the academy in meeting his goals.
The CCMTS Student Research Award Program is intended to inspire student engagement in the practice of research and interpretive studies and to encourage the experience of the benefits of critical evaluation as it relates to the profession of massage therapy while still in college where support and guidance can be provided by faculty.
The winner of the competition receives a $200 honourarium and commemorative plaque. This award will be presented to Mr. Jean by Ian Marshall, Treasurer, CCMTS Board of Directors, in November 2011 at the academy’s graduation ceremonies.
The 2011-2012 CCMTS Annual Student Research Award Program is now under way. The CCMTS is accepting papers written between June 15, 2011 and June 15, 2012. Students who graduate in 2012 before June 15, 2012 are eligible.
Eligibility requires a five to twenty-five page submission. The topic must be directly related to the practice of massage therapy and meet the criteria as set out on the CCMTS website and submission form. The topic chosen does not have to be the student’s own research. It can be the student’s examination of the research of others and therefore would require the student’s analysis of that work.
