PODCAST episode 11: The role of empathy in massage

July 20, 2021  By Staff

While much communication during the massage session is non-verbal, we also require a framework for engaging patients as to their care needs regarding pressure applied and other variables that create the comprehensive massage therapy experience. How do we know what our patient wants? What if a patient finds difficulty in describing their experience – perhaps due to a history of trauma?  What if an RMT is uncomfortable with the level of pressure they are asked to exert?

In the latter part of the interview, we explore a related subject: the role of empathy in the therapeutic relationship.  Are massage therapists properly equipped, in their training and informed by evidence, to respond appropriately to patient affect, particularly in advanced care situations?
